How to Rank Higher on Google Maps: A Simple 5-Step Guide for Local Businesses

SPIDY DIGITAL Team · October 26, 2026 · 3 min read

When someone searches near me, the top three Maps results get most of the calls and visits. Here is how to earn a spot.

Think about the last time you searched for a clinic, a salon or a restaurant near you. You probably looked at the first few results on the map and called one of them. Local businesses win or lose customers in that moment. The top three results on Google Maps get the most calls, direction requests and walk-ins. You do not need to be the biggest business to show up there. You need to be the most complete, active and trusted one. Follow these five steps.

Step 1: Claim and complete your Google Business Profile

Search for your business on Google. If you have not claimed your profile, do it today. Then fill in every field: business name, address, phone, website, opening hours, services and a short description of what you do.

An incomplete profile is one of the most common reasons a business does not rank.

Step 2: Choose the right categories

Pick one main category that describes your business best, and add a few more that match your services. For example, a dental clinic should choose Dentist as the main category, not just Clinic. The right category tells Google which searches you should appear for.

Step 3: Add photos and keep posting

Upload clear photos of your shop, team, products and work. Profiles with fresh photos and regular updates look active and get more clicks. Share offers, events or new services every week using Google Posts.

Step 4: Collect reviews and reply to every one

Reviews are one of the strongest signs of trust. After a good experience, ask your customer to leave a review and share a direct link so it takes only a few seconds.

Reply to every review, positive or negative, in a polite and helpful way. New customers read these replies before they decide.

  • Ask at the right time, right after a happy customer visit
  • Never buy or write fake reviews, as Google can remove them
  • Respond to negative reviews calmly and offer to fix the issue

Step 5: Keep your details the same everywhere and link to a useful website

Your business name, address and phone number should match across your website, Facebook, Instagram and local directories. Make sure your website has a page that mentions your area, your services and a clear way to contact you.

Finally, check your profile insights every month. See how many people called, asked for directions or visited your website, and do more of what works.

Quick checklist

  • Profile is claimed and 100% complete
  • Main and extra categories are correct
  • New photos added every month
  • Reviews requested and every review answered
  • Name, address and phone match everywhere online
